Browning Safes Origin Story
John Browning founded the first Browning company with his brother (Matthew Browning) in 1878, but it initially had a focus on firearms—specifically ones John designed. The brothers sold everything from rifles and shotguns to pistols and their designs have inspired many other manufacturers, such as Winchester, Remington and Colt. Browning would eventually expand to more hunting and outdoors products like fishing gear, bows and knives (as well as safes, which we’ll soon discuss). But it all started with firearms.
How Browning Got Into Safes
Security and firearms go hand in hand. After all, safety is the primary concern when it comes to firearm operation and storage. As such, it made sense for Browning to move into manufacturing safes for gun and ammo storage. The business took off and Browning partnered with Provo Steel & Supply (aka ProSteel) in Utah to team up and start making more gun safes.
The ProSteel line of safes was different from safes other manufacturers designed, especially due to its unique door storage system that allowed for the storage of long guns on the door of the safe itself. Browning safes also became known for their patented door-locking system, which deflects force. Browning rose in popularity among firearm owners looking for a reliable gun safe and soon became a household name.
